While millions of people are living on the internet across the globe, it is sad that many a Nigerian still wallows in abysmal ignorance in matters concerning ecommerce, ebusiness etc. An average Nigerian ‘computer literate’ dose not know the first thing about online business. What baffles the mind is why despite the magnitude of awareness created by several newspapers and magazine like Success Digest Extra, even industry professionals only hear of online businesses and are yet to have any practical involvement. Nigerian banks are fast to tell whoever cares to hear that what makes them superior to the other banks is technology. A case in view is the experience I had in the hands of EFCC a few weeks ago where I was detained in EFCC custody for about a week to the extent it seemed I will only be released after delivering a full seminar educating officials of the EFCC before I will be allowed to go free. On the 23^rd of June I had visited a near by ATM own by UBA at Lekki to withdraw some money. Behold I got an error message showing Invalid Transaction. So I decided to go to the bank (United Bank for Africa) where I bank to withdraw in person. I was told I have to pay N620 since I did not have my passbook. I agreed as time was of the essence. Then the cashier this time told my account has been frozen from the head quarters. It was strange and so I demanded to speak with the manager knowing fully well that I have not done any transaction above the stipulated amount for an individual. So what was the matter? Rather than given an explanation, I was kept waiting for over 45 minutes before I was told I would be taken to go to the Banks Head Office. Suddenly they started getting rough. I was ordered into a car and was taken to the head office where I was then handed over to the EFCC for interrogation. In all this I was still bewildered as no one told me what my offence was.

Then I was asked to explain how a bank account I opened in 2000 as a student, is receiving so much money with a very short period of time. I was accused of having received over N4 million in the account. It was then my onus to explain to the EFCC all the various online ventures that have put that money in my account. The problem was not explaining but the fact that they have never heard of Google adsense, Google adwords, getawayclub, online surveys, online stocks trading, online mutual fund investment, Paypal or e-gold. Imagine trying to teach them how google adsense works, how you can use google adwords to make money from affiliate programs and so on and so forth. In all these, the fact that their minds were already made up that I was a yahoo boy didn’t help matters. I continued my futile task of convincing these biased judges until God sent a savior. One of the officials at the EFCC seems a bit knowledgeable and claims to be involved in some of these ventures himself and tried to convince the rest I was genuine. Despite proving my innocence, I was detained for one week until I can provide a level 14 civil servant who will bail me out.

Meanwhile over 50 people who responded to my advert in SDE were sent back by UBA and some were even called back for refund some of which I have already delivered the package to. So my spending on advertisement was in vain, and people ended up getting the package for free except a few who called back for alternative way of paying. In all these, the take is, isn’t it necessary that our banks and law enforcement agents in particular update their knowledge to understand the trend of events so as to different between the fraudsters and genuine netpreneurs? How do fight a system you do not understand? I do believe that law enforcement agents should be the ones ahead in ICT, ecommerce and ebusiness knowledge. The current trend in which the yahoo boys are far more knowledgeable that the EFCC is unacceptable. The banks should not assume that every body making money online is into fraud. It is an erroneous assumption and should change.

Since the advent of the internet, many multi billion dollar firms have been made and many are still being started. Agreed today many of us in Nigeria are also beginning to really catch this fever of online biz craze but notably many are yet to come to terms with the reality that soon, as aptly put by Mr. Bill Gates, there will be two types of people soon. Those who are doing business on the internet and those who are out of business. So it is particularly worrisome that many businesses in Nigeria are yet to have online presence.

Despite personally catching the internet fever as far back as 2000, it was until 2003 when I attended a seminar organized by the SUG, University of Calabar where an IT consultant all the way from Lagos made a speech that changed the way I viewed the internet entirely. In his words “many of you are only used to downloading from the internet, have you ever thought about uploading for others to download?” What he was actually trying to say was that, we Nigerians should begin to contribute to internet content. We have to show the world what we also have to offer rather than wait for the Whiteman to create the content while we only consume. This is just like the way we import everything from bottled water to tooth picks from abroad. According to him, this was the only way Nigeria could close the gap between her and the developed world.

From that moment on, my thinking changed, I was tired of just going to search for other peoples information on Google, and just check mails on yahoo and so on. But the question here was, what exactly was I going to contribute? That was the snag.

By 2004 I was creating my first website. I say first because I now have several. This website gradually metamorphosed into a business and today I am not just contributing to the information super highway but making good money from every single thing I do online.

I had to  tell you this brief story about how I started and where I am currently just to encourage you. From now on, this column will be discussing businesses and you shouldn’t miss any. Some of the things I will talk about on this section are not even thought at  paid seminars. The reason is simple. As a student online business is inevitable. You can make do with the extra cash that comes from it and at least have some independence from Mummy and Daddy. I did this as a medical student and now even as a practicing doctor, I can’t let go.

What exactly should you be doing online?

This is the biggest question. I call it the rate limiting step. It is very important because you don’t succeed doing something you do not enjoy. The best thing to do online is that thing you do as a hobby. Think of something that can pass for a hobby. You’ll be surprised how you can develop a hobby to a paying business. It is important you enjoy what you do because, you may not immediately start earning cash from it. So if money is the major driving force you will abandon it. You won’t if you just love what you do. For example, I started analyzing football matches on my blog because I’m a football fanatic, but I earned over $500 in January 2008 alone writing about the super Eagles in the just concluded African Nations Cup.
